Deerest Hat
Materials:
Size large (or for knitters with tighter gauge) use 4 US and 5 US DPN
Size small-medium (or for knitters with looser/average gauge) use 3 US and 4 US DPN
Briggs and Little Heritage in:
1 skein Washed White (approx 200 yds)
1 skein Forest Brown (approx 100 yds)
1 skein Red (approx 20 yds)
Optional black for duplicate stitch eyes
Gauge: 11 sts and 16 rows over 2 inches
See duplicate stitch eye options below. Fill in both eye stitches or one and a half for a cutesy look.
Begin Hat
In Main Color (white) with smaller needles, cast on 108 stitches. Place marker and join to work in the round, work in Knit 1, Purl 1 rib for 6 rounds For a shorter cap, work only 3 rounds of rib.
Switch to larger needles, Knit 1 round even.
Work chart (all rows).
Knit 1 round even.
Crown Shaping
Round 1: *Knit 10, Knit 2 together* repeat between ** around, placing a marker after each knit 2 together if desired.
Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit.
Round 3: *Knit 9, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 5: *Knit 8, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 7: *Knit 7, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 9: *Knit 6, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 11: *Knit 5, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 13: *Knit 4, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 15: *Knit 3, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 17: *Knit 2, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 19: *Knit 1, Knit 2 together*repeat between ** around.
Round 21: Knit 2 together around.
Cut yarn, pull tail through stitches, weave in ends and block on a balloon.

I live well south of you. Though I was raised in Massachusetts and New Brunswick, I still get cold in the winter. But not cold enough for worsted weight yarn hats. Sport weight is my preferred weight yarn for winter hats. How do you suggest I adapt these patterns to Sport weight yarns?
