Cable Lover's Cowl - Free Pattern!
Can't get enough cables? How about making a squishy, bulky, all-over-horseshoe-cable cowl to drape around your neck and keep you warm?
It's easier than it looks and so snuggly!This is great introduction to cables.
One skein of each color will give you a large cowl, or if you're a bit less obsessed with cables you can halve it for a smaller cowl. The color combinations are endless!
Materials:
Briggs and Little's Heritage, one 4 ounce (113 Gram) skein each in Bleached White (Color A) Sheep's Grey (Color B) and Dark Grey (Color C)
Yarn available at www.maritimefamilyfiber.com
Size 7.0 mm straight needles
Cable needle
Begin Pattern:
Cast on 20 stitches in color A. Tie on color B and cast on 20 more stitches. Tie in color C and cast on 20 more stitches.
Row 1: Knit in established colors (and continue to do so)
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: Purl
Row 5: *Slip 5 stitches to cable needle and hold to the back. Knit 5 stitches from left-hand needle, then knit 5 stitches from cable needle. This should create a right-leaning cable. Slip 5 stitches onto cable needle and hold to the front. Knit 5 stitches from left-hand needle.* This should create a left-leaningcable. (See below for a photo tutorial on cables) Pick up yarn B and twist with yarn A to close the gap (pictured below). Repeat between ** 2 times.
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: Knit
Row 8: Purl
Repeat rows 3-8 31 times for a long, double-wrap cowl or 18-20 times for a shorter cowl.
Bind off in colors.
Using the mattress or kitchener stitch, sew the cast-on edge to the bind-off edge.
Be sure to block (wet the cowl, stretch and pin to desired size and let dry).
Enjoy wearing it however you want!

Slip 5 stitches to cable needle and hold to front.
